Me, I try to fix anything I can rather than pay to have something fixed. My #2 son just sent me a message saying he had to pay to have the sliding door repaired on his mini van. 30 in parts and 150 in labor. I ask him why he didn't fix it himself......."well I don't enjoy mechanic work" was his reply.Heck there are times that I don't enjoy it......but I enjoy paying someone good money to do something I can do myself even less.

Some peoples children......

I agree with you. I hate to throw something away if I can fiz it. When I was younger I used to take my vehicles to a "trained Mechanic" and when I got it back it wasn't fixed or there was some other problem created. I decided it was easier to do it myself. When you farm with old equipment, as I do, you have to be able to fix it yourself.

Yep I agree with you on that one. My son and his friends come to me all the time when they need help fixing things and I have a number of people that call me from time to time asking for help as to how to fix thing. Some times I do not know if having people having my number is good or not but it sure keeps me from getting to bored

My brother lives in the Czech republic, he only comes home once or twice a year. He keeps a car here. (honda crv)

He got a quote from the dealer to have the rear brakes done.

$1800!!!!

And that's JUST the rear.

Because of his situation, he wanted to just do it - I had to insist he let me do it.

They were going to do new pads and rotors - and for some reason new calipers.

The only thing he NEEDS are the pads - but to make him happy I'm going to put new rotors on too. Old ones are WELL within spec - and smooth.
But whatever.

Even with the unnecesary rotors, I'm still going to save him about $1600. I could even do new calipers and it's still would save him at least 1200

I still can't get over that one.

We called, it was not a typo. They explained that it was a "good idea" to change the calipers while doing the brakes. Guess that depends on who's "ideas" you're talking about.

Pepboys wanted $170 for the inner wheel bearing, and another $170 if it was the outer, they said. Got the whole assembly at a junkyard for $25, did it myself with a mechanic friend. Come to find out, they have only one wheel bearing!!!! Learned, and have done about 5 so far.

That is Exactly how I feel. Sometimes it would have been cheaper to have it fixed by the Pro, but how else do you learn?
