how do you tell if gearbox lube level is full enough or over full?

Use the check-level plug on the left side of the housing, behind the left fender, ahead of the axle.

with old equipment, it is best to open the drain plug, only enough to let fluid out and drain out any accumulation of water, before checking levels or adding oil. oil mixed with water will look cloudy (white or gray), not oily.
