I was wondering if there is an easy way to tell if my generator is charging on my WD-9? Currently, the headlight and rear light are not working (possible grounding issue) so I am not able to put a load on the electrical system. The batteries measure 12.25 volts across both battery prior to starting and approximately 12.0 volts after it has been started. The ammeter shows a hair above zero. Any advice would be appreciated. |

| All you have to do is look at the ammeter.
If the ammeter isn't showing a significant charge right after startup, it probably isn't charging much, if at all.
If you question whether the ammeter is working, replace it. It doesn't have to be one of those expensive "correct" gauges, either. You can get a generic 2" ammeter for less than $10 at the auto parts store, and it will work just fine.
Slight positive charge is better than nothing, but IMHO it is not charging to its full capacity. Your batteries should be North of 12.5V before startup, too. That's more evidence that it's not charging as it should. |

| Did you click the voltage regulator after you put it back together? You will have to do that since you had everything apart. |

| What is the procedure to "click the voltage regulator"? I had my ammeter leads flipped around so now it shows discharge when I pull the ignition switch with the engine off.
I believe I need to polarize the generator (it is a rebuilt generator), but I haven't replace the VR.

Click the VR = polarize the generator.
Search it up. I never remember. It must be Bat & Gen ??? I am positive it isn't F (Field). |

| This might be an obvious one but thought I should mention it. WD-9's often get water in the regulator because of where it is situated. Right out there behind the instrument panel where mother nature can easily get to it. It is a good idea to take the cover off of the regulator. I often find either it has water in it or it is badly corroded from water. If everything looks clean and relatively new inside then the regulator will likely work. |

| | It doesn't sound like it is charging. The battery voltage should increase by 1 or 2 volts with the tractor running at about half throttle. The ammeter should swing significantly in the charge direction as well. If you have to speculate whether or not the ammeter is actually moving, then chances are the tractor is not charging. It is good to hear that you are still using the original charging system. I prefer to leave the charging systems original on my tractors but I have the advantage of working with electrical controls for a living. Most of the charging problems I have had are on tractors that are kept outside. |

| | Do you have the control box with the four position switch, H L D B? I found on my WR9 that that control box had to be grounded. Do not know why as schematics do not show it being grounded. After grounding, the controls for the four positions worked. H and L is for charging rates, I believe D and B is for dim and bright lights. |

| No, I have the 3 position switch. I am going to follow the troubleshooting guide that Janicholson provided. Seems pretty thorough & straightforward.
