1086 losing prime, sluggish throttle response

Just went to the local dealer and bought a 1086. Tractor started right up on the lot and ran great. Bought it and got it home, and when i went to get it off the trailer, it started then acted like it was running out of fuel. Put some in, bled the system, and it ran great again. This morning (next day) i went to start, and it did the same thing. Pumped hand primer, and it fired right up. The throttle response is sluggish. Does this tractor have an actual fuel pump or just a injection pump only to pump fuel from the tank ? the fuel filters look like they have been recently replaced. I just hope the inj pump is not weak. Thanks. AP.

I'd check how much fuel is actually in the tank, and throw a set of filters on it. The fuel gravity feeds through the primary filter, into the back of the injection pump, which pumps it back through the secondary and back into the injection pump to be sent to the injectors.

How long has it sat? You never know what's in the tank, could have a bunch of algae in it even.

My 1256 did the same thing recently,plus it would die when the throttle was backed off.The pump was shot.A new rebuilt pump fixed the problem.But change the filters first.Check the easy stuff first.Good luck.Steve

Clean fuel, clean tank and clean fuel filters and keep thinking those good thoughts. If this doesn't work and you confirm it is the pump you'll want to have a shiny clean fuel system for the new pump to minimize the potential for a encore performance of the dead injector pump blues. Fuel filters look fresh? Basics mechanics 101- check the last thing that was done in case whoever done it done messed it up. During WWII the RAF did a study on Aircraft mechanical problems not attributed to combat damage, a bomber fresh out of maintenance was twice as likely to have mechanical problems on it's next sortie. I'd also look the fuel system over real good for leaks, rot, damage or patches, it appears there's air getting where you want fuel and remember keep thinking those good thoughts, heck if you're so inclined PRAY for a bad filter or leaky fuel line.

The hand prime plunger leaks really bad when you pump it. If you really shove it in, it bubbles with air when you push it. If you push it normally, the tractor fires right up. It only has to sit for an hour or so to lose prime. The tractor was a local trade in and was supposedly working a baler the day before trading in. I will change filters and fill with fuel before pulling my hair out. How do I diagnose it if it is the pump ?

Repace that hand pump. That's where the air is getting in.

if the tractor has the optional aux. tank under the left fender, then that is correct- gravity flow to the primary filter, when fuel level is near full.

when you're getting low (only fuel left in the bottom tank) the primary filter is under partial vacuum to lift the fuel.

My 1486 did that two years ago and replaced the pump, ( plunger ). It screws out and be careful, it has a brass or might be copper washer in the bottom that has to be replaced. $30.00 took care of it. If it starts right up after you prime it up with the plunger on the pump, that what mine did. Nothing was wrong with the pump just the plunger.

I should have said nothing wrong with the injector pump, just the primer pump. I never replaced the injection pump. Larry
