Lifter Cover Vent

I took apart the vent on my lifter cover ('44H) and the "filter" seemed to be nothing more that a piece of steel wool. What is the proper filter to use?

The old 1947 Lift-All manual I have says to keep all dirt and grit out of the pump, and to keep the "cotton waste" in the filler cap clean. I stuffed a piece of soft cotton flannel I tore off an old work shirt inside the cap. Works great. I wouldn"t trust steel wool, it would just keep out the bigger chunks.

With respect, the poster is discussing the road draft tube (engine) vent on the side of the engine attached to the lifter cover. I agree with you on the Liftall cap material. Jim
