howdy all
i would like to know if the distributor off say a
H or a C is the same as what is on a 400 diesel?

i have an issue with the one on the 400, i believe to much play in the shaft. it wiggles .020 to .o25. if i cant swap them out, looks like a rebuild is in order.
just wondering if it will work.
thanks in advance.

They rotate in opposite directions. The guts from the diesel, put into the other housings is OK. The shaft needs to be checked to assure it is not worn. A longer bushing can be used to touch the shaft in an unworn spot. Make sure the components are assembled correctly, and keep it in time (#1 on tdc etc. Jim

They will bolt up but not work correctly.

The C, H, M gas, 400 gas use a clockwise rotating distributor.

The MD and 400D use a CCW rotating distributor.

The 400 diesel had a 8 degree advance and some where along the line , maybe late 400 or in the 450 series they quit putting any advance, just solid shaft. I remember converting a very late 450 back to 8 degree advance so it would run better on gas cycle.
