Heres my new 1566 i just got a few days ago. It is all original with 3380hrs. It looks pretty good, is there anything i should watch out for or anything special i should check?

The only weak point in these 66 series is the crankshaft. Don't turn the pump up and you should be ok. Great looking tractor.

Really?

I would have to disagree. THe 400 series engines are some of the best IH engines ever built. Tractor pullers use these and never have crank problems. And they are turning way more horses then stock.

I"m not seeing a coolant filter. If it does not have a coolant filter and has never been overhauled I would be very concerned about holes in the liners.

Thats a beauty. Get rid of the cab, that box on the front, and send me those front suitcase weights and your good to go.LOL Enjoy. Kent

I know it's just "new tractor nerves" but why do people always ask if there is anything they can check?

Sure there's lots of stuff you can *check* but the cost to check those items will be as much as, or MORE than, simply replacing those items with new.

You can check the transmission but by the time you tear it all down and measure the shafts, bearings, and gears, you could do a complete overhaul for the same money or less.

You can check the engine but by the time you tear it all down and measure the bearings, cylinders, pistons, rings, crankshaft, etc., you could do a complete overhaul or drop in a remanufactured engine.

You can check the TA but... you know the rest.

Check the oil, check the fuel. Take it out and use it. It will tell you what it needs sooner or later.

I would have to disagree also. Our 1566 and 1586 were both turned up to 180hp until their first overhauls. After their overhauls they were both running around 200hp.

WOW!

That's a great looking outfit!

That coolant filter thing........Either change the coolant and add another filter, or if it is 'fresh', replace that so called "filter" every year.

They really aren't a filter. Just a can with a pellet in 'em that dissolves in just a few minutes of running.

Cousin's 1466 broke the crank after a pump repair - wasn't even turned up and repair was done by awesome IH mechanic. He felt bad and replaced the engine for a very reasonable price.

By golly Allen, got to disagree with you on this one. That indeed is a filter. It really cleans up a system that is full of crud. I used to install the kits on tractors that were a few years old and that first couple of filter changes could be plugged solid. One guy hooked one up backwards and it completely plugged the inside of that element. You could just tell when you drain those engines, the difference in the looks of the coolant in the bucket. Even with out cavitation protection I would say they are a great thing to have on any tractor, gas or diesel.

I think you will find that's an auxiliary fuel tank. Would make blowing out the radiator a bear.
