Machine shop just called, my distillate head checked out just fine with NO cracks.....My 450 head is cracked !!!

Im rebuilding the motor with gas pistons, can I use that distillate head without losing tons of compression or do I need to find a M gas head?

thanks guys, anthony

I was told around a $1000 so I was hoping that I could use the distillate head and sell the 450 head to a puller (I know of some that pull with no water in the block), from what i have read the distillate on a gas engine should be fine but I always look to you guys for advice...

If horsepower is of the utmost importance, get the 450 head fixed. If not, that distillate head will do just fine and for most chores the tractor might be doing, the power will be more than adequate.

That is where I was headed.

(quoted from post at 12:00:43 08/21/12) Yes, they are putting in step head pistons

You can use step head pistons for 5000 0r 8000 foot altitude. They will be taller than the normal step head piston.

A rebuildable gas 450 or 400 head should cost more like 400 bucks. A cracked head that is cracked where compression will be lost will not be valuable unless fixed. Shop for a better fix. Stitching or welding. Jim
