IH 574 gas C-200 to D239 diesel swap

Just purchased a 574 gas with a loader and was told the harmonic balancer may be out is why it doesn't run. I have a IH 5000 swather with a good running D239 and want to convert the tractor over. I'm trying to think of what would I need for the conversion and just am not too sure. Any help would be great. I'm thinking the fuel tank, throttle linkage, wiring and fuel lines will be different. Anything else or anything less?

Having been through a couple of diesel conversion exercises, I can tell you that pretty much EVERYTHING between the front bolster and the bell housing is different from gas to diesel.

This being a frameless tractor brings a whole new set of problems. On a tractor with frame rails, all you need is the correct front cover and rear cover for the engine and it will bolt right in. With no frame, the engine is what's holding the tractor together. You need to find out if the D239 block in the swather is the same block used in the tractor. The tractor block may have extra reinforcement, or special mounting points for the front bolster, cast in.

You're going to need the rear cover for sure, along with a flywheel and a whole different clutch. I'm guessing front cover also.

The radiator may be different too. IH liked to have the bottom outlet on one side for gas and on the opposite side for diesel.

Gas tank, throttle linkage, and wiring are the LEAST of your worries, and the easiest problems to overcome.

Ideally you will want a junk 574 diesel sitting in the next bay to harvest parts off of for your conversion...

If it's supposedly just the harmonic balancer on the gas engine, why don't you just replace it and get the gas engine running? Frankly, I think the whole harmonic balancer line is a bunch of baloney... Hope you didn't pay much for the tractor.

Ok, that is helpful. I figured there would be more differences than what came to mind initially. I've been sitting looking at the swather and the tractor and noticed the adapter plate was needed. I was under the impression that the clutch was the same between the gas/diesel tractors (11" disc).

Conversions are never easy, unless you're putting a 5.9L Cummins in a truck it seems. I'm thinking the balancer is baloney too, but what I was told.

I did a package deal with a corn head real and this tractor and have been working on buying it for the past few years. The tractor is really clean and the loader not beat up at all.

I'm doing the conversion cause it will be used in place of my Case 1845C on occasion and the D239 has been rebuilt at one time. Willing to take the chance at what I have to get.

So list possibly being: front cover, rear adapter plate, clutch assembly, flywheel, fuel tank, fuel lines, linkage, wiring and radiator.

Does it turn over at all? The balancer could lock it up if it is jammed somehow but other than that all it could do is cause the engine to vibrate like crazy and/or make horrible noises. The balancer is simple and pretty easy to work on. Just pull the oil pan and unbolt it. It drops right out.
