Letting you all know scammers are alive and well but not getting my money. Advertised a tractor part on the classifieds. received a text wanting more pics. received an e-mail and said the price and pics were good and said his "associates" would be sending a certified check and wanted to pick up the part asap. Red Flag. Asked him which bank check was written off of. No response for that but wanted my address so he could send the check. Well I did send address and also with message saying NO part will be picked up until I knew check was good and money in the bank. No response until a week later saying he agreed to wait until I was satisified with check and let him know. Check came priority mail for $2200 dollars more than I was asking for part. Nice try! Wife works in banking took it to work and checked the routing number and it was from a real bank, BUT the bank address from routing number didn't match the address on the address on check. She called the bank and told them about it and said they get this all the time. To bad a few people can wreck a good way to buy and sell things. since this it's CASH only deal for this boy. Thought you would like to know.

Leaves a very sour taste in the mouth when people try that sort of thing. Glad to hear you were not caught out. I had a chap attempt to steal an entire car he was meant to be repairing. Tried to export it, but the Police and Customs became suspicious and stopped the deal. A very lucky escape for me.

I wouldn't say "ruin" because if you keep your wits about you and follow a few common sense rules, you won't get scammed.

You can tell when someone's language is "off." The obvious use of "to be" where it doesn't belong for example. Using long words where short ones would be more appropriate when striking a deal on a piece of farm equipment.

You're looking at someone who doesn't use English much if at all, and quite possibly a computer translation. I hate to lump the occasional legitimate foreigner in with all the scammers but the ratio of scammer to legit from overseas is just overwhelming.

Cashier's Checks... That's their favorite delivery device for the scam. If they're sending someone have them bring the cash with them. Otherwise the check had better be for the EXACT amount. One dollar extra is a deal breaker.

Language was off, thats what caught my attention first. WWW. is exactly that. A person kinda forgets that now and again. but no more. And I did keep my wits about it. I will hang this check in the shop for a good conversation piece.

Your 100% right. You can always tell with language as I have run
some wanted ads and the responses are a dead give away! I have
been lucky and satisfied with all of my dealings from this site.

Not me

I just found one in WI that is twice as nice for $800 with a bad head. I am trying to get one of my friends to buy it. It is a really nice tractor.

One of my cousin's had someone trying to run a scam like that on him. He has fun messing with them and wasting their time and money, even got one to send him the check FED-EX overnight, when he wouldn't send back the "extra" money they threatened to call the FBI him. He was using a free e-mail account that he made up with "usbankoftn" in the name, he than came back at them saying he worked at a bank and during a recent audit he "found" $368,479.23, would they like to assist him getting out of the US? He'd offer them 40% and you know I'm not scamming you because it's such an odd amount. Didn't hear back from them after that. Yes it's a PITA to deal with jerks like that, you're smart enough to be wary and have you bank verify any instrument presented for goods or services. Unfortunately the internet and international infrastructure allows scammers to try and the laws and our government both federal and international don't have a high priority in stopping this stuff. Unless we (all governments) band together to force these third world governments to deal with the issues if they don't withhold foreign aid and representation in the UN.

I put an A/C 7580 for sale on here a few years ago. Had a guy with a NYC area code and a bad accent call to ask if it was a 4 or 6 cylinder, and would it fit in a shipping container.

I quit taking his calls after I told him it was a large 4x4 articulated tractor and he again asked if it was 4 or 6 cylinder.
