Farmall A distributor lube

I know the plug in front of the dist. cap should be removed and grease added once in a "blue moon". But in front of that (in what appears to be an adapter piece) there is another plug. I looked inside and it looks like reminants of gear oil on the gears and walls. I added gear oil through the hole. Is that what is supposed to go in there?

I have removed both of those plugs on my H and installed grease zerks. I just leave the zerks installed. I grease both of them just once per year. The zerk on the distributor gets 1 to 2 shots, or until I feel resistance in the grease gun handle. The other zerk gets pretty much the same treatment.

It won't hurt anything to over grease the the zerk on the distributor. All that happens is the grease comes out the back side. There is a cavity in the casting but no hole in the bushing. The shaft is lubed by what grease is absorbed by the bushing.

The front zerk lube the gears in the adapter housing. Over greasing that one can result in grease being forced between the distributor shaft and bushing and will end up in the distributor.
