looking to buy a 1086 and had heard rumors of some with trans. gears that weren't heat treated correct on the 86 series or is that just a rumor

I havent heard that one.... 886 was one of the best tractors we ever had here..no problems other than clunky shifter that I recall..

That happened back in the mid eighties with stock from parts. They were traced down and supposed to be sent back to depot, but, of course some slipped by and were already installed. No way of knowing for sure if the gear you just installed was good or bad until it went to heck. It doesn't take long if it was one of them. Also, I ran into a few gears that some how got through mfg with out proper heat treatment. One was a 856 bull gear on new tractor. You could file that gear on any tooth. Another was on a 1566 transmission gear but on that one half was hardened, other half was worn down to nothing in just a few hours. All mfg's miss things now and then but if not hardened (or more correctly ) heat treated properly they will not last more than a few hours unless never used of course.

I'm after 30+ years of operation any with these gears have been found and repaired. If not - after 30+ years it can't be too big of deal.
