Please help. I have a1956 farmall 300 with live power? I bought a 3 point log splitter hooked it up to the ports under the gas tank and ran two lines back to the log splitter.Checked hydraulic res, then started the tractor to see if the splitter would move. it moved real slow and jerky. So then I shut the tractor off to check res and it was so low it would not register on the stick. So i filled res back up to try again nothing the three point won't even rase now? What did i do wrong? PLEASE HELP THANK YOU.

Hi, probably pump sucked reservoir below inlet screen an now pump has lost its prime. Fill reservoir to proper level then drive tractor onto a slope with front end lower than rear and work hydraulic control levers and hopefully it will re-prime. Worst case is inlet screen in reservoir is clogged and you will have to take the top of the reservoir to clean the inlet screen.

A 300 does not have enough hydraulic reservoir to run a log splitter on its own. It only holds a couple gallons of fluid.

The typical 4x24 hydraulic cylinder on a 3pt log splitter will suck the reservoir dry long before it's fully extended. That's what happened here.

It requires 301 cubic inches, or about 1.5 gallons, of oil to extend a 4x24 cylinder. Plus whatever it takes to fill the hydraulic hoses. If your reservoir was down a little, most are, you sucked it dry.

Plus, with the constant cycling back and forth, and the force needed to split the wood, the oil will get hot quickly.

You need 5-10 gallons of extra fluid capacity. It needs an external tank that is connected to the fill pipe on the hydraulic reservoir.
