My Operators Manual state that I need to insure that the number 1 cylinder, piston next to radiator is in TDC. how do I determine when I can not see the Piston? Do I have to remove something off the engine?

ya the #1 spark plug or even all of them. put thumb over hole and crank over slow. when u feel compression pushing your thumb out use a wire or a straw and continue till its at top dead center. look at timing marks and u can see where your at.

Look in the hole for #1 you should be able to see the piston when its up and both valves are closed. I use a Mag lite one of the small ones that has the focus adjustable.

If the tractor has magneto ignition and the timing is not too far out, you can just remove the distributor cap and gently turn the motor over until the impulse coupling trips. If the contact on the rotor is pointing to the place for Number 1 cylinder high tension lead, you are on the compression stroke for that cylinder. If not, turn the motor through another 360 degrees. For coil ignition, you can work out the compression stroke as Gene Bender has said. The method of putting your thumb over the plug hole requires extremely long arms or an assistant.
