I have a 1951 Farmall M that was pull started and running 2 weeks ago but now I can"t keep it going. I got the starter fixed and the thing fires up right away but the minute I let my foot off the keyless start it quits. Any thoughts on where to look next?

Is there a wire running from the starter to the coil? Often they're wired like that to bypass an external resistor. If so that's what's giving you spark, until you release the starter. Then the normal circuit that goes through the resistor should take over, but it sounds like you have a bad resistor or connection so no voltage to the coil unless it comes straight from the starter.

The wiring to the amp meter, and thus the ignition switch and lights (the one smaller wire on the big switch with big cables) might be on the starter side and not the battery side of that switches terminals. If it is, it will not have ignition when the starter is not turning. (it won't pull start either) the smaller wire must be on the battery cable side of that switch. Jim

He didnt say whether he has a dist or a mag but does have the push type sw for the starter so we dont know what type of sw for ignition he has.

The starter pedal, this tractor doesn't have a key to turn and start it.

O.K. So does it have a dist or a magneto as they are wired different.

Cars/trucks didn't even have key start when that tractor was built.
