propper TA use

I was over on the Tractor Talk forum, and Greg K commented about shifting a TA right, and keeping it adjusted, and it would last longer? I recently got a 350 with a good TA,and need to know what he meant, and how to keep it in good shape! Anyone care to educate me? I am not familiar with Farmalls.

Buy a manual.Adjust it per the manual.Shift TA like you are MAD!Fast, direct.no hesitation.Shift TA like you drive a Detroit Diesel."slam your hand in the door when you enter the cab."

Thanks Delta Red! How often should a guy check the adjustment, would once a yr be about right? I am sure that how much use will play a big role. It will get a lot of loader work, and some bush hogging, each yr.

well first thing with these old ta's is that you probably will never need it, unless your square baling or doing heavy field work. they were designed as get though the "tough spot" in a field without stopping to downshift.when the engine pulls down a couple hundred rpm you pull the ta and this decreases ground speed and have more pulling power. then once through you go back to direct. or even baling when you hit a heavy section of swath it comes in handy. ih did not design the ta for constant use in these old tractors up to the 660 in 1963. after that the newer models dont matter.pretty much need a manual for adjust ment which is straight forward procedure. and yes dont slip it, move the lever firmly back and forward.

once familiar with it you have an eye for it. i can pretty much walk past any of these tractors and see if it is correct, or even give the clutch a little pull and watch the linkage move.

Delta is correct. Switch it in and out like a light switch. As fast as the lever will move is just fine. Use it all the time except coasting down hills (leave it in direct for that. The more you use it the longer it will last. I have one in a 350U that is original and it was used hard. Use it like an automatic trans from TA 5th to direct. Great tool. Adjustment is about every year with your use, but you will find it needs little adjustment. Moving the lever slow, is slipping the TA clutch. Jim

I used the TA on a 656D to downshift with a little down throttle and make end turns without touching the clutch even using a 3-16 flip plow. It added life to the clutch but eventually the TA did have to be rebuilt.

I agree. If adjusted properly and used regularly they last a long time. I have one in a 504 utility that is original, still works fine. The tractor does primarily loader work. Yes, switch it fast.
