I am reassembling the engine for my '44H and wondered about the paper gaskets between the block (front) and the gear cover, which includes the metal plate that is sandwiched between the block and the gear cover. Should they be put in place dry or should I be spraying them with something first?

You can put them together dry and they will work just fine, but applying some "copper-coat" or similar gasket cement will help keep the gaskets in place and aligned while you do the rest of the assembly.

i like and use perma-tex high tac gskt. spray. it never hardens and does a good job holding gskts. in place and sealing surfaces. been using this stuff for over thirty yrs.
