Strange Super H Noise in tranny

Its a stage 2 tractor. It seems to omly make the noise in 1st - 4th gears and reverse. All gears work good, but has a clunk-clunk -clunk noise somewhere under foot when moving. It has disc brakes that work good. The coupler on the input shaft is tight, but the front bearing seems to have a small bit of wiggle,Might be it?Noise dont change speed much at all in 1st or 4th

You can replace the front bearing by removing the belt pulley and the cover below. At least that worked on my Super M. To go any further you have to remove the trans cover. No need to split the tractor.

My H did that after I installed Super H gears in it and with the help of Janicholson I discovered that I had a cracked tooth that had broken off under load on the lower constant mesh gear at the front of the transmission. Every time the broken tooth came around it would clunk. Luckily I had another spare gear on hand and was able to change it out and the noise went away. You could probably diagnose the problem by removing the belt pulley drive or cover plate and peering in at the constant mesh gears while turning the engine over with the ignition off. In my case it was quite visually apparent what the problem was.

I thought it kinda looked that way,but I dont think that little bit of slack is my noise. It actually stops making the noise while rolling in gear if I clutch it,then starts again as soon as clutch is let out. Thanks for any help

yes, that is right. The constant mesh gears are still turning but are not under load, so the noise is not noticeable among all of the other sounds the tractor is making. This is also why it is not audible in 5th gear, because the countershaft is not under load. Another way to check would be to hook the PTO to a load and run it in place, the noise should be present.

I guess Im gonna have to learn how to work on tranny gears.Im good on engines, but never tackled those dang gears before.I suppose pull top off of tranny? Can you leave the brakes in place to do this job?Or does everything come out?I'll have to dig into it in the coming weeks as winter draws closer.I will probably need more help yet,but I sure do Thank You for your help so far too!

If it is the upper constant mesh gear you can replace it through the bottom of the clutch housing after removing the belly pump(if so equipped) and the input shaft. If it is the lower constant mesh gear you will have to pull the gas tank, belt pulley drive, etc and I would recommend that you remove the seat and unbolt the steering column and hang it from the ceiling. The the transmission top cover comes off and you are looking at the gears. The upper shaft comes out with three bolts and the countershaft comes out once the nut and snap ring are removed.
