Farmall utility 240 work with a rototiller?

Roto-tillers for something other than garden tractors (or hand operated) really didn't come around until tractors had live pto. May have been the rare exception for tractors with a step down low gear, but they were never popular until LPTO. Get a plow and disk if you want to work ground... better for the soil anyway.

I have a 240 Utility with a 4 foot king cutter tiller, it is off set to the right to cover the right wheel track. 1st gear works perfect. In new ground I plowed and disked first then it is a piece of cake with the tiller from then on. Do not let anyone tell you it too fast. At pto speed in first gear mine is a little over 1 mph. I would not trade this set up for anything

Think of it in terms of how many times a tiller blade hits the ground in distance traveled. Depending on soil conditions, the 240 could be a little fast. If you have a concern about ground speed, I would suggest a six blade tiller rather than a four blade.

Plowing and disking first defeats the purpose of using the tiller.

Sure it works great if you plow and disk ahead of the tiller, but tilling is supposed to be a one-pass operation.

For tilling last year's garden, a 240 is too fast. Don't let anyone tell you that it'll work.

thanks for the advice I'm guessing it depends mostly on the soil type I've never owned a utility tractor or rototiller so just doing a little research

I wish I could post pictures of my gardens for you but I can't but I have sandy loam and plant some of my rows far enough apart that I do not need to cultivate but clean up next to them with the tiller set lightly, but if these guys says it will not work then I guess I'll just keep doing it wrong. But trust me in my ground it works just fine. This information is from someone who has one and is doing it.

(quoted from post at 14:48:41 08/15/12) Nathan, send me an email and I will sent you pictures of it at work and you can be the judge. [email protected]
I don't have a tiller on my 240U, but do have a 42" tiller on my JD garden tractor. I would never try a tiller on my 240U in my soil. The GT has a hydro and I have to go over it slow a few times to get it deep enough. One good thing about the 240 is it does have "pressure down" on the 3 point. that might help in some cases.
