M Farmall Front end

I have a 1040 M Farmall and when I drive it down the blacktop to my hayfield it shimmies in the frontend, is this normal, is it something that can be fixed easy? Is there a way to convert the PTO over to LIVE PTO? i love this reactor, it is my first tractor and I bought it used about three years ago, I have used it to disc with, it has a home made front bucket, like a manure scraper, it has no tilt to it just scoop and release to dump, I have used the bucket to pick up round bales with a chain around them and move around the farm. Thanks, Lynn

You can rebuild the front end, Carter & Grunewald has the parts.

Depending on your PTO needs you could find an M&W clutch to put on the tractor.

Your local IH dealer has the parts also, I bought mine there and they were the same price as Carter. My M is a 1940 and it only had the half circle sector gear and it was badly worn. I located a used full circle gear that was in much better shape. It had been rotated but I installed it splitting the worn areas so that going straight it was riding on "fresh" teeth and when you turned it was on worn teeth. That way it was the "tightest" when I was going straight down the road.

Just my 2 cents

Thank you, I am not real familiar with tractors yet,
what is the M&W clutch, is it like an add on in the
the drive shaft line? Thanks, Lynn

The M&W clutch is installed on one of the rear axles when you to de-clutch the axle all the power for the drive gets routed to the de-clutched axle and tractor momentum stops. It doesn't allow you to change gears or anything but you can start and stop the tractor say like if the baler you're pulling loads up and you need to stop feeding it. It may seem like a Rube Goldberg set up but it's actually a similar set up like Allis Chalmers used from the factory. You can't convert an old letter series Farmall to independent PTO unless you change out everything from the flywheel back (Clutch, trans and rear end. If you really need IPTO trade up to a Super MTA (M-torque amplifier) or a number series (240,300,350,340,400,450,560) that already has it.

Thanks, I can use it like it is, just takes both hands and feet!!! LOL Was just curious how hard or if it could be done, i love the old M and I don't think I want to alter it too much from original, maybe some day I'll buy a newer tractor!

The M&W was a common add on back in the day. I have completed a rebuild on mine but am still waiting for the boot to made.
