Look what followed me home!

SN 20814SJ, 1955 Farmall 300 in a few pieces. I bought the tractor and the dolly for $350, a deal of a lifetime I know. I bought the tractor for the rims and (front) tires to help put me grandpas H back together. After thinking about it I might try to get it back running on the cheap if I can.

Owner said he was mowing hay and left it in the field overnight, someone took out the number 1 plug and dropped two 1/4 in nuts in it. He tore it down and found the nuts and never got around to putting it back together. That was a couple years ago and its been in the shed ever since. The TA is stuck on the high side.

I know I'm missing several parts, 4 push rods, generator, throttle lever, tin work.

What do you guys think, try and make it a runner again or part it out?

Looks like you have most of the tinwork, and basically everything else is there. I'd like to see it turned back into the workhorse it used to be.

some years back a guy where I was working had an older IH he said was a SuperM. Said it was stuck and wanted to sell it. I was a JD guy so I asked How much in case I found someone interested in it. He said $100. Had aftermarket 3 point so I decided to buy it, "to part out". Turned out was a SMTA. I got it home and decided I wanted to see it run, couldn't just part it out and didn't realize at the time what a SMTA was. I now use it as my baler/swather tractor, lots of work and parts but a great tractor now. I actually paid more for the JD back blade on it than I did the tractor.

Looks like a nice project, I really am interested in your tow dolly, would you mind sharing diagrams or pic and specks on it so I could build one for my M Farmall! If you want you can contact me off forum at [email protected] Thanks, Lynn

Lynn, look up home made tractor cart in implement pictures on the left side I built one years ago that works great.

Sounds like you bought the dolly and got the 300 thrown in for a bonus. Now after blowing a bunch of money on the 1951H I rebuilt in 1999, I think you have enough of the tractor to put it back together without spending a ridiculous amount of money. Your young operator seems to like it!!

Looks like a great tractor for the price. I've read that if you run the rear tires backward they'll wear better for tractor pulls. Is that what was going on there?

I'm really inteestedin how it towed... What speed felt comfortable?

She towed pretty good at 30 mph, the rearend started to hop at about 40 mph so I shut her down and set the cruise at about 28. I only had 32 miles to get home and the kids had a movie playing in the truck. The rear tires are SHOT, cord is showing on the sidewall at every rib all the way around. Knowing how cheap I am I'll probably use those tires until they give out, but I won't drive it on the road, no need to, I have a 450 and a 706 that do all the real work.

This has happened to me. DON"T get distracted from the restoration of Grandpa's H. Get that done. THEN worry about what to do with what is left of the 300.
If you decide to rstore a number series Farmall, look to something bigger than Grandpa's H. Like a 400 or 450. Live power, live PTO T/A Fast Hitch. Whole new animal.
Start parting that 300 out now for funds for the H resto.

Put it back together. One piece at a time is how I do it. I love the dolly. I bet it was dancing at 40 miles per hour.
