help with valves

Getting ready to put the head back on my super c. I am being told to set the valves any where from 14 to 17 thousands,which setting is right?also what is the best order to set them? I am 76 and not an expert mechanic but I listen good but this is my first tractor to go into and need some help, Thanks.

With spark plugs out so you can turn the engine over and do one at a time set them at 14 this has been since they were brand new dont know why anyone would say any thing else. Do that when they are cold and dont worry about them later.

Just for perspective, the difference between 14 and 17 thousandths is .003 inches.

It's a very very small amount, and really not worth hedging over. You could set them anywhere between .014 and .017, and the tractor will run fine.

Just for giggles you could set on at .014, the next at .015, the next at .016, and the next at .017, then start over... It'll still run fine.

Of course normally you set the tightest measurement (.014) and set them all the same.

The range is really for performing tune-up checks. If it's between .014 and .017 you don't need to adjust.

Usually it means that the .014 gage should fit but the .017 should not. You can"t accurately measure a gap with a feeler gage: just determine whether or not the gap is larger or smaller than the thickness of the gage.

As mkirsch notes, it isn"t all that critical on the high side. The goal is to make sure that the gap is large enough that the worst-case stackup of thermal expansion, runout, etc. will never prevent the valve from closing completely. A small error on the high side just means that the valve won"t open as widely as it possibly could. Performance tuners worry about this.
