need help with 354 clutch please

clutch has never worked right since we have had it.atleast ten years
2 stage has never worked right, could never turn pto on using clutch.
always had to before we crank the tractor. hardly ever use the pto on this tractor
anyway. but it is geeting where it will not pull and getting worse.

was supposed to have a new clutch in it when we bought, dont know if they did somthing wrong or what. i have only smelled the clutch once, and i was hard on it then.

the clutch goes down easy, and when it comes back up, it has a good 1'' of play.

what could be wrong before i tear into it?

thanke for any help.

Hi Steven, the PTO clutch could be stuck.
Re transmission clutch slipping, the pressure plate fingers are adjustable thru the clutch inspection plate on bottom of clutch howsing. The dual stage clutch is more difficult to assemble and adjust than single clutch, see following from Bernard le mecano:
Hi, you can place all the clutch and pressure plate on the shaft and bolt the engine to the rear end. If you remove the PTO clutch, make sure to align the clutch carefully in the center of the pressure plate, before replacing the bolts on the fingers, for that, remove the flywheel, place it on flat surface, put the transmission clutch, the plate, belleville spring, plate, PTO clutch, then pressure plate, belleville spring and cover. Align all of the parts, put 3, 5/16 long bolts and hand tighten to the flywheel. Secure the 3 bolts on the fingers and jam nuts, then adjust the gap. Make sure to adjust the 3 fingers at the same level. The gap for the 3 bolts is .090 inches. Remove the pressure plate, replace the flywheel on the engine crank and finish the job.
