1945 farmall M differential

I had a question about the differentials used in Farmall M's. mine is a 1945 Farmall M and I do alot of antique tractor pulling with it and from what I have noticed is that mine is going slower in 1st gear than the other guys with M's that are close to the same year, the motor was just rebuilt and running stock rpm's, I was just wondering if anyone had any information on this or knew where I could find some

You have a 'speacial low gear'.There were several gear options available for the M,H ,etc.Your sn plate will have a suffix code to indicate.Someone here can tell you how to "decode"

I do not know the code, but that is a prized gearset. In demand for some types of pulling, and for slow planting and other slow tasks. Jim

You never know with pullers. If reverse is also slower than a standard M you probably have the slower first speed gear. Or the pullers may have a W-6 ring and pinion put in. Or there streaching the RPMs.
Was wanting to say or other pullers would be faster than you if they installed W-6 ring and pinion and you run standard gears..

thanks for the help, I must have the special low gear in the gear set because all the other gears seem to be just as fast as the others

X1A was the suffix on a 51 m with a low speed gear set. If yours is just slower in low gear it may have a different suffix.

Unfornunately the serial tag om the tractor is missing so unless there are numbers cast somewhere i have no way of figuring out the numbers
