How do you tighten the belt that runs the water pump on a 300 u ? It looks like there is a bunch of threads that would force two halves of the drive pulley tighter together, forcing the belt farther out to the outside of the pulley.

Is that how its done? Any pointers or tips? looks like it might be a booger.

When it is tight, it can be pushed in a total of 1.125 inches, or 3/4" from straight edge between pulleys. This is to keep the fan/wp bearings from wear. The belt is so oversized that loose is OK Jim

Thanks for your help. That is good to know. this is so loose I can turn fan pretty easily. I'll hafta check how far I can push it in. I never saw any evidence of overheating. maybe it doesn't need tightened.

this tractor was changed from 6 - 12 v before I bought it, and the lights were never hooked back up and the gauges don't work, so I thought I would see if I could get the gauges to work.

Things kinda went in the toilet fast.

I was surprised to see the alternator belt broken and that's when I saw the belt so loose on the water pump. I think the alternator has something wrong ... it doesn't feel good ... as if something was loose and dragging inside. I pulled the wire going to the switch off the alternator, not realizing that there was a choice of four pins to put it back on... I'm wondering what I'm gonna hafta do to get a new alternator belt on

... and the gauges still don't work :)

If there are 4 connections on the alt, it might be a early delco with an external regulator. If so, putting a Hitachi alternator on it is the way to go. Many posts in the archives, and it fits well under the hood. (it has in internal regulator, and needs only an idiot light (or resistor, or diode) in the excite wire, and a wire going to the amp gauge. Diagrams are in the archives Bob M diagrams, and Hitachi alternator are Key words. Jim

Loosen the jam nut on the pulley and then back out the slotted
set screw be sure to use some penetrating oil on all the
threaded parts. Then use a block and hammer to lightly tap the
front half of the pulley in a clockwise direction to tighten the
belt. Rotate the engine every so often to keep the belt tracking
properly in the adjustable pulley.

That's the way IH did it. Only a problem if the threads are rusty which they probably are. There is a bolt you have to get loose first.
