Hi Jim, requesting some of your knowledge, re: quick/fast hitch on a Farmall Super C. The present hydraulic hitch cylinder is and has been leaking and has to be either rebuilt or replaced with another hydraulic cylinder. Question is , in my area we have a Princess Auto Store , similar to Harbour Freight or Northern Supply that sells these hydraulic cylinders. When replacing this cylinder what do I have to keep in mind that will work properly? Thanks Murray

The three major factors are stroke, piston diameter, and strength (includes rod diameter, and pressure limits PSI applied, and push pull limits. If these are close, and or better in the new cylinder you are good to go. It cannot be longer, or shorter without major issues. The end fastning pin holes are also important in that if they are smaller, they must be machined out to match the IH cyl. if too big, they must be bushed. Jim

Thanks Jim ,this will give me some information to return the first of week and have a much clearer idea of the questions. Thanks, Murray

Hi, yes I did see a "head plunger", 1/2" pin out about 5/8" on the top of cylinder. What problem would that cause and no I did not see this on the replacement when I was viewing in the store. Thanks, Murray

The original is capable of being set to a specific depth using a collar around the top of the ram. This pin and collar, when adjusted lower on the chrome ram, shuts off a valve in the cylinder head that stops the inflow of pressure, stopping the cylinder at a set depth.
If it is used regularly by you, it would be important. If you do use it the replacement will not work in that way, and it will be missed. The only ways to get that feature would be to have your OEM cylinder rebuilt, or find a good used IH cylinder. Jim

Hi Jim , this part would not get used very much. Mostly will be a show/parade tractor, although the hydraulics are a nice set up, with pressure bothways. If it does not do damage to the system, then I think will make the purchase of the relacement clinder. Thanks, Murray

Not only does it have the shuttle valve that is used to limit the height or the depth of whatever is mounted on the fast hitch, but it also has the extend and retract ports in the block on the rod end. The extend oil is fed thru the fluid line that runs down the outide of the cylinder. This keeps the cylinder a small and compact unit. If you use a store bought cylinder, you are going to have to run a hose down the outside of the cylinder for the base mounted extend port. As others have said, you are going to have problems mounting back in the tractor because a store bought is not going to have the same clevises on the ends. Unless your cylinder is complete junk, I would rebuild it. The seals are just o-rings that any bearing house will have. Sometimes you can get lucky and find an auto parts store that will have them. Take the cylinder apart and take the seals in and have them matched up. The hardest part is getting the wiper out of the top end. It is just an lip type oil seal that is put in backwards. The local NAPA store had the one I used. JMO.
