solid state ignition, which tractor

Kind of a long question. I just purchased a solid state ignition and I have 3 M Farmalls. 1944 gets used the most, hardest clipping hay fields in the late summer and fall with a Landpride 3590. 1949, dragging tree limbs, using a carry all and grader blade. 1954 Super MTA, the bush hog and the hay rake. The chores won't change because I think each tractor is suited for its job. Which tractor gets the upgrade and why? Thanks, Ellis Kinney

(quoted from post at 17:37:09 08/09/12) As for me none i have seen tomany problems with them . I'll stick with the points .

i am in the middle of restoring my 450LP and i put the pertronix kit in it. brand new kit and it was DEAD right out of the box. pulled the distributor and put the points back in it, runs like a champ.

Put it in the one you use least. I like solid state ignition. If it works well, then do the others as you find the time. Jim

Dont worry, if you put them in right and don't hook it up backwards you won't have any problems. Just read the directions and do what it says and you will be fine. The only people that have problems are the people that think they know it all and don't read directions. Just saying!

Pertronic (many sources)
Ignitor (YTMAG parts right here)
Are the three Easily found brands, I believe they are all good. Price is a factor, don't pay 2X the price. Jim

Kind of strange, all the electronic stuff I worked on but I have never installed a kit in one of the old tractors. I have heard good and bad. Usually good from the guys that sell them and bad from the guys that they crapped out on. Thing I like about points is not that they are as good or better , just that you can almost always get them up and running without a delay, and much easier to static time an engine out in the boonies on a cold and miserable day and get the guy going again.

I've put in two sets of electronic ignitions. One in a SMTA and the other in an older Toyota fork truck. The f.trk. would burn out a set of points in 3 days of moderate use and was a bear to start. That was approx 4 yrs ago & haven't had a bit o f problems starting. T

he first set I put in the SMTA was dead. I called the guy I bought it from and he sent me a new one NC. That was before I put the ones in the f.trk. and haven't had any issues with it.

I've recomended them to several friends & no one has complained about theirs. Pertronix is what I have used. I have a set in the sshop to go in to a SM as soon as I get the time to put them in.

I've installed several sets of Pertronix Ignitions in Cubs and have had no issues, only great results. I've got another set in the garage now that I'll be installing this weekend.

I would replace them all with electronic over a period of time. I put Petronix on my 240 over 20 years ago and have not had the cap off since.
