German Diesels

Hi guys, I got to drive a fella's 826 today, and what a surprise it was. That 358 was so quiet, I was shocked. Of course, I'm used to the old 361 in the 806, but, wow. I kinda want one! -Andy

I have never heard quieter diesel engines than the D-310 and D-358. The one thing you might notice on the later ones like in a 786 is a funny sounding noise at a particular rpm because they stopped using the counter balance weights on the crankshaft. Then to overcome that if it was objectionable they changed the front pulley if I remember right. The exhaust noise is different though and some objected to the humm.

I have both 310 and 358 in a 706 and 826.Super quiet,super engines, long life engines.The 310 in the 706 is turbocharged and just sings!It puts out a measured 96 hp.

BIL has an 826 German Diesel that he and his dad got new. About 12,000 hours on the first engine rebuild. The really amazing thing is that after his dad passed he really neglected that poor old tractor. When it had it's first rebuild the re-builder told him that it needed an new injector pump. He refused to spend the extra money so 500 hours later he got another rebuild. He still uses that tractor today!

In the 1970s I sold IH tractors for a dealer here in the UK. I 1975 we got the German 946 and 1046 tractors to sell. They were great tractors and the bigest selling point was the D310 and D358 engines. We never had any problems with those engines, they just kept going. MJ
