How much trouble is it to convert a 6 volt gen. to 12 volts.Im working on a F14 and I dont run it enough to keep the battery up,and I need to keep it looking as orginial as possible,12 volts would make it easier and safer to jump start

This is my understanding and it may be completely wrong, but you basically take the generator to a generator/starter shop, and they swap out the 6V guts for 12V guts.

That is correct. Around $150 which includes a new Delco voltage regulator. Generator shop in Indy I have used in the past.

No reason a F-14 needs 12v 6 will start it many times before the batt needs charging. Going to 12v can cause trouble with the Bendiz hitting the flywheel as it will spin way too fast.

it can be done buy installing a 12 volt regulator, but check with a repair shop some 6 volt gen. have a third brush that is used with a cut-out relay system that needs to be unhooked ,the 6 volt generator can produce up to 17 volts ,i have an h set up that way and know of a couple more, use to work with a man that would put a 12 volt reg. on 24 volt military gen. and convert the rest of the old truck to 12 volt because 24 volt components were expensive compared to 12 volt

Its possible to just use the old 6 volt genny but change to a 12 volt voltage regulator, Ive done it and it works.....NOWWWWWW before anyone has a calf and gets all worked up, take a chill pill, IM NOT SAYING THATS ENGINEERING CORRECT or that it charged at any high rate, IM ONLY SAYING IT CAN WORK

The CORRECT way is to have the shop change out the Field Coils and convert it to 12 volts then get a 12 volt VR etc orrrrrrrr just go buy a 12 volt unit

If its not charging enough check out my Troubleshooting Procedure, it may be a minor problem.

The best answer for your situation is to go to WalMart and buy a battery maintainer for about $20. The battery will always be charged when you want to start the tractor, no matter how long it has been sitting.
