Newbie taking a closer look at the H

Thanks for all the advice on my previous post. I went back out to the farm to look at Grandpa's 1947 H.

The initial survey looked good. No evidence of any leaks anywhere.
I was really impressed. After a few minutes on the battery charger, it started right up. I drove it for several laps around the barnyard, and it really did well. Easy shifting, no issues in any of the gears that I could tell, no smoke or anything. However, I was too chicken to put it into road gear with those tires!

I took everybody's advice, and I ordered all the manuals and the parts manual for it. I trailered it up and brought it over to my house to begin cleaning. Wish me luck!

The last photo is of Granpa's toolbox that he bolted to the PTO shield. I like it a lot, actually.

Looks great! I have two '44 H's that were my Dads. He bought one new in 1945 & the other one used in about 1952 from the local IH dealer when a neighbor traded it for an M. Yours has a Delco battery ignition unit instead of a mag. Parts are readily available for that unit. It was common in the '50's to replace a bad mag with either a Delco (like the one pictured) or an IH battery ignition unit. At the time, it cost less to replace a mag than it did to fix it. Both were provided by your friendly IH dealer. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)

I brought my Grandpa's H to my place on Memorial Day this year, but your's looks a lot cleaner than his was. Best of luck to you. I've gotten a bunch of great help here, I'm sure you will too.

I know a guy who at the tender age of 12 drove home a new H from the dealer. He has retired from farming and has restored that H. WOW! Fantastic!

That one don't look too bad.

I have no idea if it's original. One of you experts will have to tell me.

I found out yesterday an interesting story - turns out Grandpa wasn't the original owner of this tractor.

Grandpa bought an H new after WWII. Several years later he owned (I believe) a super MTA and then a 560. He sold his H, but then he missed it. He missed having a small tractor for the flexibility. He went back to the guy he sold his H to, offered the guy MORE money, but the buyer refused to sell it back! So Grandpa bought this one from someone else, and that was in 1967.
