Farmall H Overhaul Still leaks out the Rear Main-WHY??

I helped a friend replace the rear main seal on his overhauled H and it still leaks. All the new felt got installed in the seal grove (no trimming ends) all new seal plate gaskets and sealant, crankshaft surface looked smooth, little round new plug felts installed. Did we miss something or could the leak be coming from somewhere else in the back of the engine? Crankcase breather clean so no internal pressure in crankcase. Do not know what to do next??

There is a drive in plug at rear of the camshaft bore. behind the steel plate. If the engine was completly overhauled and new cam bearings installed it would be removed and installed. Or if the camshaft was installed without the gear it could push the plug back. Or if a cam gear was pushed or drove on a cam in the engine without cam support the same.
Retainers warping that the rear main seals go in is a common problem. Check the sides that contact the block and hold the two cleaned up halfs together at the parting line and look.
Good sealant on the gaskets keeping it off the felt is needed sometimes. I used to use a sealant for motorcycles on the gaskets that would leave gasket material stuck to both sides if the parts were removed. Later they changed something in the formula, maybe to be more enviromentally friendly or something because its not any better than some others now.

Some thing to think about:My 560 has the holes for the alignment pin and some of the flywheel bolts drilled all the way through on the crank, it leaks even though the seals were replaced.Sealer needs to be on the bolts and in the holes. Mine still leaks a small amountof oil yet. It is not a lot, but you can see it dripping off. Just another possibility.

Yes all H tractors had the spiral grooves and felt seals that I know of. On another note I started to install the felt rear seals in a 350 engine this week. They were from felpro and didn't fit right. One was cut to thick and the other thick on one end and to narrow on the other. Have felpro replacements comming, hope there okay.

I seem to recall (from here) that a new type seal was available for no spiral cranks. He mentioned the smooth crank in his post, Just piecing things together. Jim

Had the same problem with a 200, oil leak after new seals installed etc. Turned out to be a cracked pan where the bend was made behind the bolt flat on the radius. leaked just like a bad rear seal tho.
