Seat problem with M

Ok because of a commnet someone made yesterday about the seat on my M I took a good look at it today. It's the type with the cone shaped spring and shock on it. The top bushing on the shock is gone and what looks like it should have a bushing at the hinge point at the front is pretty well worn. Anyone know of a cheap easy way to fit the pivot point? Guess I'll have to get a new shock for it too. Can a new, stiffer spring be found?

Thanks Rick

I know they make 3 different springs. Light, medium and heavy. All
designated by notches on the top ring. I you find a heavy spring let
me know. My H needs a heavy spring as 6'4" 200 lb me bottoms
out the seat with a medium spring in it.

LOL no worse than me at 6'5" and 260! Actually thinking about the box type mount used on the 460/560 and a newer type seat that can be adjusted for weight.

I've heard of putting a football inside the spring then airing it up.

I haven't tried it, but it sounds like it might work.

Cool a DIY air ride! May have to look into that!

On mine I put another spring in with the first. Kinda thread it in there with the first one, a little tricky but do-able.

I fixed up and re-painted an H for a friend about 6 years ago, and the Monroe-matic (seat with the large coil spring and shock absorber) was in terrible shape. The front bushings were all but gone, the shock was broken, etc. I got the seat bushings and the "sleeve" that the bolts thread into from the local IH dealer (had them on the shelf in CNH bags) I got the new shock absorber from a local guy who handles aftermarket old tractor parts. I had probably $70 bucks in the rebuild of this, but nothing else I did to that tractor made a greater difference in making it SEEM like a NEW tractor--- at least to anyone who had operated it previously. I now always pay attention to the seat assembly when fixing up an older tractor.

You can get the new rubber bushings for the front pivot point. As for shock I replace it because when the bushing are gone the schock is pretty much shot. I have replaced the spring on a M and 450 with an after market spring. I weigh 230 lbs. and with the new spring the seat only goes down about 1 1/2" when I set on it seams very stiff and won't bottom out.

Most of the aftermarket suppliers will have replacement rubber bushings for the pivot point. They come with a new pivot bolt as well. Not terribly expensive either...

They might even have replacement shock bushings. You might be able to get something that fits at a REAL auto parts store too.

Try rolling two springs together. Even the old heavy springs were way to light for someone >200lbs. You can only get one spring these days.

I was able to get new "heavy" springs thru our CIH dealer. Not sure if it was aftermarket or what. I'd give Ken at Carter - Grunewald a call. He has access to a lot of parts for the older IH tractors.

Rick,

The condition of your seat sounds like a plain M that I have. I'm only 150 soaking wet and the seat squats way down when I'm on it, also bushings worn. So I can imagine yours being plenty uncomfortable. You bounce left and right and up and down while going.

I rebuilt on a SM I have with new bushings and new springs. I got the spring from either this site or OEM, can't remember which. The spring is actually too heavy for me but would probably be perfect for a heavier person. Made a huge difference in the ride!

The seat bracket you have should have several holes on the bottom to allow adjusting fore and aft. Should be all the way back for a taller person. I like mine set far enough back to allow me to stand without the back of my legs hitting the seat. If you're not on too rough or uneven ground you can stand while you're raking or plowing and makes steering a little easier, IMO.

Where did you ever get the idea there is only one spring available?

Do you ever surf the internet?

Did you ever do a search for Farmall Monroe seat spring?

Where did I get the idea?

It's been repeated here over and over and over for years, first of all.

I have also checked all the common aftermarket suppliers and they only list one spring. This site, one spring. OEM, one spring A & I dealers, one spring. Steiners, one spring.

CaseIH dealers list the SAME part number for all three hefts of spring, 354670R2. You can look it up yourself.

They USED to offer three springs, but they don't anymore.

A&I has the heavy duty spring for the heavy duty operator.

Tisco sells a spring that 200 pounder will totally collapse, but works quite well for light weight operators.

Some dealers with websites DO sell both springs.

It HAS been discussed on here many, many times, and it is always mentioned that there IS a heavy duty spring as well as the light duty spring.
