Fan belt inverting itself on a 350

I have a 350 that I just installed a new fan belt on because the old one was flipping itself around upside down and finally tore. But, the new NAPA 24379 belt did the same thing (the flipping over, that is; not the tearing . . . yet) after a few hours of running. I'm guessing that the pulleys must be worn out. Anybody else experience this problem? Did new pulleys solve it?

Has the belt got enough depth. Sounds like you might not have the right belt. A lot of the belts they try to sell you at the auto supply stores are not the right ones for the application. Pulleys could be worn also as you stated.

Pulley aignmentis also a factor. If the belt number is a match, and the pulleys are aligned, I would take it back. This belt shaoud be pretty loose. It should move about 1.125" when pushed hard with your thumb. Jim

I found the NAPA number on this forum from a post a few years back; I gave them the number and not vice versa. Visually it appeared to match what remained from the one that was on there. So, I believe it is correct but could be wrong.

Based on your comment it is very possible I am tightening it way too much; I doubt I could have moved it an inch with just my thumb. This could very well be what killed the one that was on there before too. I'll loosen it up and see what happens. Just eye-balling the belt on the pulleys it appeared to be properly in line.

Lot of companies used different angels on their pulleys to make a belt a dealer item only to get the proper fit. Don't know if that's the case with IH but something to look at. I went through that with a GT a few years ago. Would go through a belt a year. Found out the aftermarket belt was designed for a different angel pulley. Got an OEM belt and it worked perfect for for 3 years and according to the guy I sold it to still no problem.

The old manuals told you to tighten the belt till you could push the belt in 3/4". You can do this by putting a straight edge on the belt between water pump and crank pulley. If you push the belt in between the pulleys you should have 3/4" between belt and flat edge.

True the belt should probably be a lot looser than you'd expect.

BUT - I believe that's more to go easy on the bearings, not so much about the belt.

And I would imagine a looser belt might be more likely to do what you're seeing. That problem is probably more aligment related.

Make sure the pulley's are perfectly aligned and on the same "plane".

In other words, don't just look to see that the bottom of the top pulley is aligned with the top of the bottom pulley. Make sure all sides of the pulleys are in line - left to right, top to bottom.

There is as much, if not more, mis-information on this site as there is correct information. Your best bet is to find the original IH part number for that belt, go to NAPA, and have them cross it over to a NAPA number. If they can't cross it over, then they do not have the correct belt.

If you live in a more or less rural area, you shouldn't need to do anymore than ask for a belt to fit a Farmall 350. They will be able to look it up.

may have just got a bad belt not impossible to do, pulleys would be shot to cause that problem, when you get a new belt lay it into the pulleys and check to be sure that it's not running in the bottom of either pulley
