The plan of someone, who shall remain nameless, is to spend as few dollars as possible on needed parts until can learn more about the overall condition of an ole rusty 41 Farmall A.

Thus far, have fired up the engine and all cylinders test at 80PSI. Smoking from the engine reduces considerably with each running of the engine for 3-5 minutes.

Cool radiator - will seek a patent for it and may not buy a radiator.

Gas tank from a lawnmower with an IV to the carb mainlining gas.

I think I would put the oil pan back on it! LOL Otherwise, whatever works in order to find out just what you may be up against. Most often, the low buck method works just as well as high dollar diagnostics. (Only on older machinery, though.)
 

The "radiator" should work okay for testing purposes, but when it comes time to make 'er work for a living, you'll be huntin' a REAL radiator real quick.
 
A little baling wire would make it so the gas tank doesn't tumble off...of course, duct tape could suffice too!
 
While you have it running you need to run it in all gears to be sure they operate smoothly and properly, especially road gear.
 
Okay, I see that the feller seems to have used electrical tape for his gas tank. Some wire or heavy string would have been cheaper. I'll tell him. (See new photo)

Now, about that hole in the manifold. I know that bubblegum will not work. But nickel rods are expensive. How can that hole be plugged, somewhat plugged, less likely plugged or whatever to allow the engine to be run, oh, 30 minutes or so, 3-5 mins at the time to further check things out until he wins the lottery? Seriously. Somewhat. Will dropping a bolt in the hole do anything of value to reduce expansion of the hole or will it get sucked into the cylinder or blown over to the neighbor's house?

weld a nickel over the hole (it would keep in the 'custom' look)

not really designed for it, but I've used my small
wire feed welder, set up to run flux wire with no gas
to repair manifolds. shouldn't work, but does
 
Really, the tractor is not mine. It's located about 100 miles from me. However, I know the feller quite well and am trying to assist him. And, we're having some fun as we move along.


Eventually, if everything checks out reasonably well, he does plan to do it right. No plans for a show piece; but a good running tractor. Maybe to haul children on hay rides. But, mostly for the fun of it.

Ennyhow, this is a several years project to spread out the cost and the fun. Yes, he was warned that it will cost him more than the tractor will be worth. But, he says that most hobbies cost money; so I'm not arguing with him. (I have a Cub that has cost about $3,000 thus far - and in these parts may sell for less than $1,500)

So, on with the show.

Hed better get that inline fuel filter off and put a sediment bowl on that lawnmower tank before he gets jumped on!! Or does he own stock in the fuel filter company?
 
Actually he has been mowing lots of yards and has lots of parts for his lawn mowers. I think he just temporarily "borrowed" that filter from his stock of parts - not stock in the company.

He will eventually be installing the Farmall and Forum approved Farmall gas tank, sediment bowl and gas line.
