I don't know much about the Red tractors, but I have a question. Did a 400 diesel start on gas and switch to diesel like the M's or did they have a direct start system to start on fuel? A fellow told me they were like the M, but I see one around at local pulls that starts on fuel. I am confused, please help me out. Thanks in advance. Dale

The M series, 400, and 450 were all gas start diesels. The only direct start diesel of that era was the 350, which had a Continental diesel engine.

If a starter motor with 100% more torque were used, and if the intake system were cleaned up to flow (pulling), and the compression relief valves were kept closed, or disconnected, it could be started on ether, or propane. They do not have glow plugs, and would be tough to get warm enough to fire correctly. Possible yes.
A different engine might be retroed into the tractor you saw. Non stock class. Jim

I have a 49 IHC M it wont let me shift into 5th gear and makes a nocking noise in other gears like somethings loose ,any suggestion as to what it could be ? And does the tractor have to be split to repair anything within the transmission ?

If you find one that has the original engine and does not use the gas start it is a British import. There will be a B in front of the model number.

Stanly, start a new topic, this one is lost inside another. The trans probably has a toothe off, or chipped, on the constant mesh gear at the front of the trans. The 5th issue is likely either it is worn and has no engagement splines remaining, or it is locked out of 5th with a bolt in front of the shifter. A long bolt stops 5th shifting, a short bolt allows it. If it goes into the 5th slot, and if held there, makes gear grind noise, it is the splines on the input shaft, and 4th 5th slider gear. No split needed, but lots of take it apart. Jim
