How hot should a coil get? Too hot too touch? My tractor, 340 utility with petronix, has bee dieing when worked hard. Ordered a coil from here, hope it fixes the problem.

Your old coil is toast.A new NAPA)coil will fix the problem.A fancy expencive Pertronix is not necessary.

Its hard to describe how "hot" but in general many get fairly "warm" but shouldnt get so hot you cant keep your hand on them. But a lot depends on how and where they are mounted due to ambient heat and heat transfer.

The pertronix switch uses a solid state device to switch coil current on and off instead of mechanical contact points opening and closing, but shouldnt drastically affect (if alls well) the coils basic current draw.

Is the coil matched to the tractor?? i.e. if its a 12 volt then is the coil a true 12 volt rated (labeled 12 volts or 12 volt not for use with ballast) coil?? Its NOT a 6 volt coil now is it?? that would get real hot. Its NOT a coil labeled "12 volts for use with ballast resistor" is it??? If so it means what it says YOU NEED A BALLAST or it will get real hot.
