1949 RR wheel will not turn

I had a 1949 Farmall M gave to me and the right rear wheel will not go forward. We jacked up the back and tried spinning the wheel and it spun. But we let it back down and tried pulling it with the truck and it won"t turn. The left one turns fine. Does anybody know what I could be? It has the lambert brake system on it if that helps.

There might be a broken bearing in the final drive. The balls can (and often have) jambed between the bull gear and case. If forced, it will break the bottom out of the housing.
Use a hydraulic jack ubder that axles housing (out toward the end where the axle comes out. Use good blocking and cribbing to assure a solid lift. Watch the axle as the pressure is taken off the tire, and transferred to the jack. The axle and wheel should remain straight, and not be loose. If play is found, the inner axle bearing is likely bad. Jim

I assume when you jacked it up and turned the wheel the opposite wheel turned backward? Something ahead of the differential (or in the differential) must be bound up. Not the brakes. They have to turn with the axle. And you could have multiple problems such as a broken pinion shaft. I guess you will have to tear into it and find out. But if the wheel turns when jacked up it's NOT the brakes.

(quoted from post at 15:57:35 08/06/12) It could be stuck in two gears.

If that was the case the engine would have to spin when clutch was not released. If it moves jacked up but not when on ground my money is on bad inner bearing and the bull gear is cutting into the rearend housing.

Jacking it up has the affect of lifting up the bull gear as the wheel pulls down on the outer end of the axle.

You will need to pull the top off of the finals.
To check for sure, drain out 5 gallons of oil, and remove the PTO. When out reach in and find parts on the bottom, that are remains of the bearing. Jim

(quoted from post at 21:24:18 08/07/12) When on the ground it turned going backwards but won't go forwards. Left wheel turns fine both ways.

If there are pieces of bearing in front of the bull gear they will wedge between the gear and the housing as the gear turn in the forward direction. When in reverse the pieces will stay in front of the gear. Jacking up the axle may lift the gear high enough that it will not catch any of the pieces to pull them under the gear. If you force it forward hard enough it can push the pieces out through the new hole in the bottom of the housing.

Jack it up and remove the right tire then see if it will spin. You offset the balance on the axle removing the tire and center and the bull gear would once again be resting low. Pull PTO and inspect. With enough weight you may be bale to push down on axle end and get it to move if bearing is bad but that bull gear is heavy.

The M i am going through the now had the right bull gear try to join the outside world at one time due to bad bearing.
