popping piston ring noise

since my w9 makes a popping noise under any load and backfires out of carb. someone told me that it could be a stuck piston ring so is that a possible reason. thanks

adjust valves - adjust the carb - make sure you're getting a solid spark - make sure you're timing is close to proper.

THEN I would start thinking about things like stuck rings.

that is a valve or camshaft problem.remove valve cover and check to see that all valves are opening while turning engine over. adjust valves to .017 hot, .019 cold.
stuck ring will not cause backfiring.

I agree with the others, check valve clearances, then if issue check compression. May have bad valve. A piston ring issue would show up as blow by or oil consumption.

I had a 46 H that was acting the same way, took the valve cover off & two pushrods had jumped out of place, the valve lash was WAY OFF. The two valves were starting to get "sticky" Got real lucky, I was to pop them loose with a few light taps, applied some tranny fluid and they freed right up, neither push rod was bent. Set the valves & it ran like a new.
