CIH and CNH may be the same company now, but...

As long as I'm fixing little annoying things on my "new" 454 I decided to do the top seal on the steering unit, which occasionally leaks a few drops of oil around the shaft. CIH says it's no longer available, but the steering motor on a Ford 7710 seems to be the same unit and the seal for that is available with a CNH part number. What's more crazy is that if I want the entire steering motor, the dealer lists it at $675 if I order it with the CNH part number and over $2000 with the CIH number! Maybe we ought to start compiling a cross-reference database of silly stuff like this...

WOpp and I were talking about that kind of thing the other day. IH was famous for using the same parts for a long time and using common parts. When looking for some of this scarce stuff it is helpful to look at other brands that may be using the same equipment.

some years back I needed a universal joint for a jeep. I went to the Jeep/ord dealer in town. A friend of mine who also worked there and had a jeep told me to get a Ford part istead of jeep because the jeep part was 2 times as much, same cross and made by same country. Guess packaging is expensive

If it is just an ordinary seal, the IH and NH numbers can be crossed to SKF or National. You might see if both the IH and NH seals cross to the same number.

I run mostly IH tractors and New Holland hay equipment. Have a very good CNH dealer about 14 miles from me but can I order CIH parts there? NO WAY I have to go to the CIH dealer about 40 miles away on the other side of a major metropolitan area.

What's wrong with this picture????????

My dealer had their IH dealership taken away but you can still buy parts. They were both IH and NH before the merger

We have a Case-IH dealer that originally was a CASE dealer, and we have a New Holland dealer that was once a Massey Ferguson dealer, and then a Ford farm equipment dealer, and those TWO dealers are right next door to each other, and to add to the confusion, if you go around the corner, we have a John Deere dealer, who USED to be the International Harvester dealer.
