McCormick Deering grain binder part

where should I start looking for a part for one of these old ground driven 8 ft cut binders?

A bundle forming spring is broken off and the broken off piece is missing. It's sort of "C" shaped.

Not sure what the correct name is for this part. It's not the packers. This spring (there are actually 3 of them) hangs down from above the bundle and raises up to let the bundle out when the knotter arms rotate through their cycle.

Thanks for any help. Ron

Those are the retarding springs. The front one is different than the middle & back. The front spring is a #V84 1/2 & the other two are just plain #V84. I thought the Depot still had a few, but I guess the Amish got to them. May have to find used ones.

Have dealt with a number of PTO binders through the last 20 years. I know the spring you are talking about.

My best suggestion is a parts machine you can rob one off of. When I owned running binders I had three parts machines for the IH one I ran. Not sure if the one parts machine I have has that spring and I doubt it does but I can check. Check groves in your area. A parts machine is a good plan if you intend to keep yours running.

Other option is the Amish. I have dealt with a Amish machinery dealer in the Hazelton, IA area.

You may try Norman Macknair @ B.W.Macknair & Son,Lewistown,Pa. @ 717-543-5136.He had some parts machines there a while back.Hope this helps!
