Ok guys I need your help....

After rebuild, fuel gauge is now dead. Replaced sending unit & electrical guy who is helping says gauge is shot.

Ordered new from CaseIH ($100) and it looks like crap compared to original one.

Call the places I know to see what to do, no luck.

thoughts?

Any way you can unscrew the "guts" out of the new one and install it in the old one with the IH face attached? Face looks to be riveted to the internals in the picture, but can't say for sure.
The guage on my 240U appears to be the same, but it does not work either. I carry a stick under the seat.

IH had a service bulletin on this. They changed vendors on the fuel tank senders and made them (ironically!!) non compatible with the original dash gauge. Solution....by a new gauge too!!

The gauge you have is the new CNH replacement.

I'm not aware of anyone making the correct faced fuel gauge or glow plug meter for a 460-560-660 series.

You can still order a 6-volt IH faced gauge from CNH (371056R92...fits the 340) but this is not compatible with a 12-volt 560...

do a search for fuel gauge restoration service, i think the company is called instrument services inc. they can restore the gauge or reface the gauge as necessary. we have used them before. i'd have to dig around for their phone number.

I have used them before on antique cars & trucks, they did a marvelous job on my 55 F300 Tach. They will give you an estimate before any repairs are done, & if they can't fix it, they will let you know BEFORE hand, they also have many sources for NOS gauges, clusters and parts. You may have to send your old one in & let them "assess" the options first. Since your gauge is electric, I seriously doubt they will ahve any trouble repairing it to like new condition.
Very good people to deal with, and their results are awesome.

no big deal , just get a used original one from tractor wrecker. not too often the guage screws up.

thanks guys!!

tomorrow I will plug in the new gauge and make sure it works properly, then send them off to make it right :)

either rebuilt old one or make new one w/ new face.

Let's see you REPLACED THE SENDING UNIT now the gauge
doesn't work. HMMM you think maybe you might have the wrong
kind of sending unit??? Older Motor and Chilton manuals have
troubleshooting procedures. Usually it is the sender that goes
bad.

Here is a link to some interesting info. http://auto.howstuffworks.com/fuel-gauge2.htm

I don't know myself, but if this is in fact how they work, I think you should be able to connect your old gauge to 12 v (the battery) to see if it moves.,, and determine whether it is the gauge or the sending unit

Ken mentioned earlier that IH changed the sending unit in the 560s, and the newer sending unit is not compatible with the original gauge.

That's probably what's wrong.

Colby560, please tell me you have a polished light switch on the way. The old one looks out of place with the rest of that shiny machine. Keep up the good work.

When they refurbish your old gauges, how do they repair faded out faces on the gauge? I'm thinking og going this route since all my gauges work on my Super M. Just gauges are a little faded.

I would give them a call, as I was not present when they refurb'ed any I had them do. I don't know how it's done, but it looks brand new. My tach was faded badly and you know how many colors they have. I was at a large local car show and the guy had a 49 Cadillac, and gave me one of their cards. They did his gauges & they looked factory fresh also.

GREAT NEWS GUYS....

After talking with couple gauge places, they all told me what to check for to see if I could repair it.

So we did a little more work today, and found the issues. Two things, we cleaned the original sending unit & added ground wire to original gauge and yes what.... WORKING LIKE A CHARM!!!

that is great news, original is in great shape.
