We received new sleeves for our Super C today, and when we reviewed the book, we began to wonder, is there any need/reason to put them in the freezer? The book says without the o-ring, they should fit and turn freely the full depth.

No need for the freezer. The only resistance will be at the oring, use soapy water or oil at that point.

Not to be funny but I use water soluable K-Y jelly for o ring instullation Have heaard of oil discengrating o rins

The freezer trick is used sometimes for dry sleeves to reduce the o.d. a little for easier installation.

Your Super C has wet sleeves, you should not need to put them in the freezer to get them in.

I use a little soapy water, but any of the suggestions by the other posters should work for you.

Wet sleeve versus dry is what we forgot...my dads done the rebuild jobs before, he just forgot that the freezer trick is for the dry sleeve.

Put in quite a few at the factory, IH used glycerin with a little water added. Never knew of one leaking at pressure test before further assembly. Joe

I just used faucet grease from Truevalue hardwear store. The important thing is to get the oring groove and the step in the block as clean as possible. I trial fit each sleeve without the oring the first time. They are suppose to fit above the top of the head. Also you will probably need to clean the sand out of the block around the sleeves before you do anything.

Oil won't hurt them. There is nothing keeping the oil from the crankcase from getting on the bottom of the o-ring. I use dishwashing liquid when I put them in.

Just coat the end of the sleeve with dish detergent so it will slide thru the new seal. Make you clean that block area where the old sleeve seals were installed. Use a drill motor and a wire brush. Use a good lite and also look in the bottom of the block for any crud as this might restrict coolant flow. Hal
PS: Clean that recessed area at the top of the block so your new sleeves will seat.

Don't want to steal your post, just want to know if the sleeves on a C are flush with the block? When I replaced my head gasket, the sleeves were a few thousands above the block.
