MTA Diesel fuel filters

If, changing the auxiliary fuel filter can you use the final fuel filter style in place of the old one?
Or do you need a conversion kit?

CNH and aftermarket companies still sell both filters.

BTW, mine are both two different part numbers.

Yes, I believe so. I'm pretty sure that my local CIH Dealer sells me (2) final fuel filters for both my 450 and 806 Diesels. I know they always sell me 2 filters of the same part number, and I once asked if there should be a primary and a secondary, and I think they told me they only stocked the secondary filter. The ones my dealership sells me are fleetguard filters. Hope this helps! -Andy

Originally there was only the single low budget string filter. Somebody figured out that not protecting the little pump was indeed a bad idea and they added the "aux" filter (with the cheap element) to keep out rocks and stuff. Along the way the second filter got "improved". Eventually filter prices came down for the fancy ones and IH pretty much went to one filter for both sockets.

I apparently was not clear enough. I would like to use the Same type of filter that is used in the primary in the auxiliary in place of the the string one that was used. Do I need to make any modifications to accomplish this?

The string one isn't string anymore. It is a traditional style filter but there are two different filters still available.

That one guy said he runs the same in both and that is what his dealer sells. Doesn't sound like there is anything more to the matter. I wouldn't do it because they still sell both of them. I have even bought them from CarQuest and they had two separate filters.

Yes you can find SMTAD tractors and others with the final type stuck in them but unless the adapter kit was used its just sitting in there doing nothing. If you try a final in the auxilary hole you will see it just falls in without the o ring touching the bore unless it has the spacer in it. Also the housing hold down bolt shoulder needs to be like the final fuel filter bolt to reach the top of the filter.
Starting sometime on D264 engines in 400 tractors the filter base was changed to use the same final filter in both places. Don't know if you can find the adapter parts unless used. Probably could find a filter housing assembly for the filters from the last 65 % of 400D or all 450D tractors and put it on maybe as easy. Near where the housings bolt on will be a cast # One that ends with R1 is the late type. Since its a SMTAD and maybe you want to keep it original 99.9 % of people looking at the tractor wouldn't know by looking that it has the late filter housing assembly. Few of us around that could spot it though.

(quoted from post at 11:39:21 08/02/12) Sflem do you happen to have the filter numbers?
Thanks!

You can actually look them up yourself in quite a few places.

Dave, you had me a little worried for a moment, there. I thought I would notice if a filter didn't fit in the location correctly. But, since I have a 450, I guess I don't have that problem. Interesting conversation. I've definetly learned something new. Apparantly, since both primary and final filters are available for the MTAD and older, I wonder if they are available for the newer tractors? I understand the concept of a primary and final fuel filter, I can't help but wonder if using 2 final filters like I have been is the right thing to do? -Andy

Both filters the same is correct for Farmall tractors with the later base and for early bases with the conversion package. Farmall 400 tractors with engine # 15402 and higher and all the 450 tractors used the same filters for aux. and final. I thought IH quit selling the old aux. filter after they were used up after the conversion packages were made. Been years since I wanted to purchase one to see though.
Conversion packages just came with a sleeve to fill the extra space in the bore of the old type filter housing, new bolt and a final filter.

sflem849 does the aux. filter type 62946da they sell now still use the metal pieces on the top and bottom of the filter or made to fit without them.

I bought mine most recent ones from Carquest and they didn't use them IIRC. I haven't bought CNH filters since 2005ish.

Edit - I do remember I was mad because they don't come with the o-ring and I had to go to CNH and buy one. I would have been better off buying them straght from the dealer.
