Hello all. Im trying to get my f20 going for a show this weekend. She will pop off 1 time on the first crank. After that nothing. If I wait 20 min it will pop 1 time again. Anybody think it could be the timing? I did clean the points last fall. Plugs are clean and all fuel was drained for winter and fresh gas has been used. Any advice would be apreciated.

If you have spark and fuel, did you check the compression in all 4 cylinders? Do you have some valves hanging?

If it pops once and then balks I'd shut the fuel off before I tried again. It sounds to me like it's flooding. Once it starts turn the fuel back on.

did you check to see if you have spark ? Usually if you have a flooding problem you have fuel dripping out the bottom of the carb. Are you getting plenty of fuel to the carb? Take the drain plug out of the bottom and make sure you have good flow. I would suspect a condenser problem.

Ironmesh,I had the same problem last year,First shut the fuel off, might be flooded,if not have you been running this tractor lately,I found that the gas had turned to crud in my carb.It was green looking,I blamed it on ethynol,I cleaned the carb and added stabill and seems like my tractors start easier

Make sure your mag's implulse coupling is snapping when cranking. Pull off a plug wire and hold it away from the plug 1/4" while a helper cranks the engine. Should see a hot blue spark. Hal

Thanks for all the replys everyone. This morning I tried to crank it over and it cranked over but did not pop. I tried to crank it over again and She was completley froze up. I didnt want to break anything so she is just sitting here froze up. Ive never heard of a tractor freezing up right after cranking it over. I guess She wont be going to the show this weekend. Any more advice would be great.

Remove the spark plugs & squirt engine oil in each cylinder. Dry cylinder walls may be why it is reluctant to crank.

If it were me, I'd pull the valve cover and make sure you didn't break a valve and drop it into a cylinder.

kind of a stretch - but easy enough to do that it's worth checking.

Pull the plugs, make sure you're not loaded up with gas.

Oh stranger things have happened. It's pretty easy to get a short bar jammed in the coupler behind the clutch and try turning it backward. You will find out if it's snug somewhere of an obstruction. Good luck.

well, I can tell you one thing that will lock up an engine in a heartbeat. If you have a seeping head gasket and one of your cylinders is full of coolant. If a cylinder has coolant in it and you come up on compression, you will think she "locked up". Like Cowman said, put a short bar in the coupler and take the plugs out and see if the old girl will spin over then.

just remember that even turning it backwards, it can/will still fire!

If there's a kill switch make sure it's killed.
