504 power steering cylinder

I have been busy fixing leaks on a 504 utility. This work has been long overdue. The power steering has been working perfectly for 47 years (IH quality for sure). After washing the tractor down for some recent radiator work I noticed that the power steering cylinder was leaking. My local hydraulic shop claims that they have not had much success repairing these. I am not sure if I should try another shop or just take a crack at it myself. Has anyone here successfully repaired these cylinders before? How do you get the gland nut/wire ring out of the cylinder to get it apart?

If you are real careful putting the seals back in it should last. Unless the bore or shaft is scored or worn too bad. From your picture I would say that you have to compress the two end plugs back into the barrel just enough to get whatever is in those rectangular holes to come out, whether it is a wire or flat plug of some kind. When you put it back together and hook the hoses up, oil pressure will push the plugs back in place. Not sure about the block on the right side, must have to unscrew off the rod to get a new seal in the end plug, unless the piston inside the barrel comes off the left end somehow. I would have to see it. Hope this helps somewhat.
 
Thanks for your reply. From what I have read in an I&T manual, the two end plugs need to be turned some way to get the wire rings out of those rectangular holes. That is my dilema--not enough information. I was hoping to find some pictures on the inernet to show me how but no luck. The cylinder is working very well--it just leaks steadily around one of the end plugs so I expect that the bore is fine. The shaft is like new so this cylinder should be a good candidate for a rebuild.
 

You should use a spanner wrench that engages the holes in the end caps (gland) to rotate the wire retainer out. Turn the gland to expose the end of the wire, pry the end up just enough to get it started out of the hole then rotate the gland to get the retaining wire out.

Scoring in the barrel is rarely a problem, usually just leaks out of the rod seals.

The seal kit, if you get it from a dealer, will have new retainer wires.
