Neighbor has a 1945 M on propane.Has been setting for 4 years.Air filter complety stopped up with water@ mud dobbers.Took it off and it started right up.
N0w the problem, backfiring out the carb.Firing order is correct, so is timming, tappets all working and set right all valves opening. #3 cyl. is dead, has compression, plug is firing.
Hoping some of you feller might have some idea to help me out before we have to pull the head.Hoping it'just something i've overlooked.
Thanks,kdub

maybe some that muck got stuck in the manifold?

pull the plugs and carb - blast the cylinders with compressed air through the plug holes as you turn the engine See what comes out.

Don't assume that just because a spark jumped a plug out of the cylinder that the plug will fire under compression. Swap cylinders with the plug and see if the miss follows. Heat the plug to red hot with a torch, install it still warm and see if it fires.

If 3# is still dead after swapping plugs, swap plug wires. I bought a 1941M several years back. When it was delivered the fellow said "sounds good don't it". I said "sure on 2 cylinders". Ended up being bad plug wires.

Thanks for the replies,I did swap plugs and with propane the plug wouldn't be wet like with gas.
A tractor mechinec tried for 2 days and couldn't start it,guess he didn't think about the oil bath being plugged,he put new plugs and wires.
I'm bout to pull out what little hair I got left. The old M has got factory wide front and working 3 pt lift, rear tires look new.
Sure do hate to have to pull the head and not be the trouble. K DUB

very easy to wire plugs backwards. remove distributor cap, crank engine so you can see which way rotor button is moving and make any necessary adjustments. then remove rocker arm cover and crank engine, to see if there is a stuck valve.

Valve cover only, stuck valves can be tapped on with a plastic hammer and juiced up to freedom. Bent pushrods are an easy repair. Jim
