I question whether a -9 will pull a 5 bottom plow, but I know an 820 will... been there, done that.

That one should be easier to paint the right colors than most.

There is a little color left on most parts. Looks to be in fairly good shape as well.

The front two rims should be white not yellow as you most likely know.

Looks like a pretty nice plow. There really is more paint left on that one that most. It must have sat in a shed a while? Most appear to be solid rust colored.

I hope your 9 has what it takes. The book says 4-5 bottom tractor so you may be alright. It would be a shame to pull a painted up #16 with your 820 and a painted JD behind the 9.

Noooo!!Dont paint it-Far more interesting in its original form. With new paint it will just be another old repainted Farm imp;ement.Nice well kept originals are getting pretty rare.Repaints are getting pretty commonplace. Its only original once!

If you get rid of the JD yellow wheels (they should be cream white) your plow will look fine as is. However, if you do want to paint it, it should be all red except for black or blue bottoms and colters (this plow was built both during the blue paint and black paint years) (I personally would go with black bottoms and colters) and cream white wheels.

Dave,
I"m not suggesting you paint it or don"t paint it. But if you do decide to paint it I found the IH "paint committee" instructions on what parts are red, blue, cream and black. I don"t know how to send it to you via this YT website so I"d need your email address because I know how to email it to you. I also have some pictures of a resurrected #8 I can send you, the paint schemes for most of the trailer plows are basically the same. That plow looks to be in very good shape. Wish I had found that!

FYI Dave, That plow will convert into a 4 bottom fairly easy,if needed???? On the 5 bottoms you could drop them down to a 4 and the 4 bottoms you could drop down to a 3 bottom with a few hand tools. My #16 manual has some very useful info. ;)

i'm thinking the same. my -9 pulled a 3-18 oliver fine, 4-16's were about all she wanted. i think a 5 bottom would be way too hard on the old -9.

Wow, nice plow.

I would not paint it. Repaints are a dime a dozen, nowadays. I would lose the yellow rims, however!

Hope you enjoy it.

I would paint it. It is no pristine original. It is just an original that happens to have a few scraps of paint left.

It will be painted not much paint left if it was a nice original that
had quite a bit of paint left on it I could see leaving it unpainted
. I think a nice 4 -14 would have been better behind the wd9
and super but when a nice 5-14 is found 10 miles from home
for a good price and have a tractor that can pull it you pick it
up. What is the deal with super chief bottoms are they any
good I have heard IH plows pull easier than JD plows and I
know the 820 Deere plays with 4-14 it will pull it buried in 4th
gear. Thanks for the info my email is open if not it's

I worked for a farmer near Haven, KS one summer and we pulled a 5x16" JD plow with his 820. Drove a W-9 a little bit, but not plowing. Never got the impression it had nearly the power of the 820.

I can remember as a young guy hearing farmers talk about which plow pulled easier and the consensus in our neck of the woods was IHs and Olivers pulled easier than JDs. Dad had a JD 55 3x14 with his first JD 60 and with the second 60 we used a "rooster comb" Oliver 1 season that belonged to a guy we rented land from. Then as a senior in HS, I rented some land on my own and I bought an IH #8 because I wanted hydraulic lift. Again, Dad said both the Oliver and IH pulled easier. That was just our experience.... your's may be different.

Super Chief bottoms are the ONLY IH bottoms you can reliably get parts for these days. You can order online, get them from many Tractor Supply stores, or just go to the local CaseIH dealership. In spring, the CaseIH dealerships around here usually have parts in stacks all over the floor of the showroom.

They were not original to the plow AFAIK, but if you want to actually use the plow to PLOW, you want it to have Super Chief bottoms.
