Almost ready to paint

Have the Super M torn down as far as I care to go. No its not what some of you will like. But its my tractor and I am happy with how i have it so far. I am thinking its best to change all the fluids before I paint so that any that I change after may make the paint run. I also got my paint and primer. I am using the Rustolem rusty metal primer. And the Majic paint from TSC. Figure I'll be the guinny pig for that brand as I haven't heard to much. Again it might not be perfect but I'm not going for perfection. I did use some Bondo on the hood as it was pitted. But it came apart easy, and it had more red paint on it then i thought. I will be painting probably Wednesday or Thursday then letting it set in a controlled humidity garage for a week. Will let it cure for that time then put it all back together. I painted the manifold so far and thats about it. Heres a few pics over a couple days.

Not like? What do you mean not like? I love the M series, my favorite. The M series tractors are the best looking tractors on the planet, IMHO! I know not all will agree.

Good luck with your paint. Looking forward to more pictures.

No personal experience here at all. Just remembered a post from TMonton about 3 pages back. He seems a bit down on the paint Jim

He meant some may not like the surface prep/disassembly.

Guinea Pig ;)

I went to TSC the had the Valspar in JD green, and Yellow. Went to Lowes as they carry Valspar. Said they couldn't get it for me. So I was stuck with the Majic. I am not thrilled but seeing as how I wasn't paying for the Case-I.H. price i settled for this. Any one know where I could get the Valspar? I didn't open the can yet

Fullers Farmalls,

Below you ask where one can get Valspar paint. Mills Fleet Farm stores still carry Valspar in rattle cans... also still carry the Valspar Restoration paints too.

I was in your shoes about thirty years ago. Trust me. Take the time to remove the tires and rims from the cast wheels. That is the only way you can do even a half assed job of painting your rims and wheels. CIH paint is too expensive? That isn't expensive paint my friend. I have sprayed a lot of it over the years but never again. IF I had to use CIH paint I would for sure use a hardener. I certainly wouldn't use anything any cheaper than CIH paint. The other thing is your own personal safety. I see you have a pretty small enclosure around the tractor which is good from a standpoint of keeping dirt and other contaminants away from your work. Unfortunately it also means that while spraying you are going to be heavily exposed to the paint and fumes. I painted a lot of tractors over the years with just the canister masks with replaceable cartridges. Now I have cancer. Don't know if there is a connection but I wonder. If I were to start painting tractors again it would be with nothing less than a full air supply mask. A little pricey but worth it. Not trying to be critical or a downer just pointing out my own experiences. Good luck and be safe.

I'm on your side it's your tractor do as you like Personally I have had best results with van cycle from orshlins and other stores I use thier hardner and (hold on to your hat) regularRESH gasoline for thinner. I put hardner in spray can first as hardnes seems to have lots of thinning effect. Then not much gas is required. I have had problems adding hardner in all paint befors starting for me I add hardner with each fill of spray. The cheap 20 doller gravety paint guns from harbor freight with plastic hopper on top do me as good or better job than siphon gun also all paint is used not like small amount left in bottin on syphon type good luck

2150 is not expensive -- get that, what you have is the worlds worst paint. Yes, its your tractor, but with all that stuff on it, 20% of it is not going to get painted. Or if you try to paint that 20% there will be runs all over the place. I am also doing a SM, I imagine the paint, primer, hardener and reducer, gun cleaning material will cost me a minimum of $500, maybe as high as $800.

I think they are only in northern WI though. He is in PA or Western IA IIRC.

Valspar does have a locator on their website, but it isn't very good. Farm and Fleet has it on their website and they do ship BUT this item is available in store only. They are at $50/gal.

For reference Majic is at $29.99/gal. CNH paint is $52.99/gal. All those prices are w/o hardner and reducer.

Oh! Sorry for the rant. I failed to read between the lines. :?

It's all good. You had to read about 4 previous posts from the last month to fully understand the back story.

I used valspar on my 47h it did not hold up at all and it was properly mixed and applied. Get 2150 from caseih its worth the money.

Yep, Western PA. And I also won't be using hardener. I don't have
supped air available. This is my first tractor and I will use it as my
learning curve. I appreciate all the help you guys have given me.

Thanks, I knew there was one kid your age in both places and I can't keep them straight. I guess I know I am getting old when I call a 20 year old a kid. It is heck to turn 30!

The other guys are spot on.That cheap paint will turn pink in a year on two.Spend the extra money fot good paint and have a RED (not pink) tractor for many years.

should let the 3 coats of primer 1st thinned light dust coat 2nd cover coat 3rd less thinner final primer coat .dry for at least a day before paint or you may have solvent pop ,

You might consider removing all the rubber items. Paint is hard on them. Also mask off the axles. Impossible to move wheels with lots of paint on them. Also spin the disc brake adjusting bolts and boots. Out Hard to adjust painted. Put a plastic bag over the carb and distributor. Pull the plug wires and plugs and put a ball of masking tape in the holes.
Wet the ground down before you spray.

I think that was a wise move. let somebody else be the guinea pig with the other paint. I think you would have been sorry you used it once it turned pink from the sun.

I have painted my M 3 times in 12 years, I started out with CIH 2150, with hardner, in five years, it was pink, then tried Van Sickle, no hardner, again, pink in about 4 years, I painted it again yeasterday with Majic paint, looks really good....so far, am going to give the enamal about a month or so to fully cure, and then clear coat it and hope for the best. Hopefully with 4-5 coats of clear on it, maybe it will not fade so bad this time...
