farmall a cooling system

I have a 41 farmall a and it seems like the coolant isn"t
flowing. Only the top half of the rad gets hot. I recently put a
temp gauge on with the prob in the bottom rad elbow. I
have no reading on the gauge. The water at the bottom feels
about 90 deg and the top is just about boiling. What could
be causing this.

There is no water pump on an A. Its a thermo siphon system which relies on the hot water to move to the top and replaced with the cooler water. That's why you don't see water flowing.

Yes I knew that but shouldn't the entire rad still get hot. Only about 3/4 gets hot and where my gauge is does not. The top of the rad boils and the bottom is barely warm. The cylinder head also gets extreamly hot and you can hear it boil in the head after you shut it off

Sounds to me that it is working just like it should. I often wonder why people think they need a heat guage on the thermo-syphon systems-if they are working correctly, you won't get a reading, or not much of one, anyway. If I-H engineers thought a guage was needed, there would have been one on from the factory. (My $0.02 worth. jal-SD)

Ok thanks for the advice. I just had a concern of it overheating it felt to get pretty hot. Figured the temp gauge was a good way to make sure I didn't overheat it until now I have no experience with a therm system. Thanks

Well if the radiator is hot on top & cool on the bottom, it shows that the fan is pulling air through it & the tubes are open and it is cooling properly. Sounds like everything is normal.

You should not have the water boiling at the top your block has some of the passages plugged. When the tractor is being used hard the temp at the top will be around 170-180 but after many yrs the holes at the bottom in the block get plugged or built up with enough crud water just doesent flow good. ive replaced enough sleeves and have found many with the holes plugged solid with crud smoemtimes pretty thick. If you arent using it hard you will be OK You can fill the system with Vinegar and run that for a while then drain and you will get a lot of it removed. Best way is remove the radiator and backflush out the top of the block.

They were available from the factory as an option. The dual fuel ones had them also as you closed the shutters till the temp ga warmed up then switched to distilate and shut the gas off.
