vented gas cap?

I just bought a new gas cap for my super c. It isn't vented and when I open it, it has a lot of vaccuum. I was wondering if it would work to drill a tiny hole in the top? Should I just get a new vented cap? Will not hurt anything the way it is?

The one I bought is exactly like the one that was on it but the gasket was gone and it was in pretty rough shape.

Tenneco has a Gas Cap replacement program That allows you to get a new baffled gas cap for free. Use the search for box, and find the reference. You will need your tractors serial number and model. Fill it out and get your cap. It must be vented, or fuel will not flow. Drilling into a cap will likely make it spew fuel on modestly rough ground. (original problem being fixed by law suit). Jim

I got 4 of them, but they came from International Harvester, the truck people, not from Tenneco.

Ive noticed the replacement gas aps sold by various vendors dont have the vented holthey were made in China and someone sent them a radiator cap and not an original gas cap. Send your serial# and model and they will send you the new type higher vented one. Now if you want an original cap i do have a couple as i have went to the new type.

I guess I better get one. This one creates so much vaccuum that it is extremely difficult to unscrew. I went to Tenneco website but it was their home page and didn't see where to apply for one. Just want a good cap. Would like to look original if possible.

Non vented, short fuel tank caps are used on the 86 and 88 series tractors as they have a separate vent hose going up the cab leg and under fender. They get plugged and that is main reason you see so many sucked in fuel tanks on them. They do distort even when vented but I have seen some sucked together really good.

There's a good reason you wouldn't find anything on the Tenneco website. They never had anything to do with the gas cap program.

Navistar, the company that was formed out of the IH truck division, is the one that administers the gas cap program. It was rumored that they were going to end the program a few years ago, but apparently it is still in operation.
